| Bio: | [yes, yes, I know. I haven't updated in about a year. I have somewhat of a guilt complex about it, but I had reached total burnout with doing daily recs. I do want to get back to doing regular recs, so don't give up on this LJ completely. I just don't know when it'll happen...] "I may not know about art, but I know what I like." What is the point of this journal? There will be at least one fanfic recommendation per day, sometimes more. What do I rec? I read mostly slash/yaoi, but like the occasional gen story, and have some het couples that I enjoy as well. Fandom-wise, look at the interests below. If I haven't recommended something from there yet, I will in the future. Fandoms/pairings not on the list show up as well, I didn't list many of my rarer fiction interests, or the fandoms I only follow sporadically. Right now, I'm heavily into Harry Potter, which means that there'll be relatively many recs from that fandom. I do try to keep it somewhat balanced, tho. How do I rec? These aren't in-depth reviews - I lack the time and the talent for that. So what you get are simple links, with maybe a short description and/or a reason why I like the story. The pairing or main character(s) will usually be indicated in the subject line. Anything else depends on the story. I'm more likely to write a longer text for a story that I'm not 100% sure of. If I really love something... there are only so many ways I can say "It's really great, read it". Are there warnings? I warn for underage if it's under 16 in non-anime fandoms (er... unless I forget - I don't mind it, so it's often not something that I really take note of). I will usually indicate if a story is not happy, or contains some specific kink, but you will *not* get consistent warnings for death/unhappy ending (or rape, but that's more unlikely to come up). Things I like in fanfic: I love long, well-plotted stuff, especially if it stays close to canon and is very in character. Or really well-done AUs. Humor can be a very good thing, in capable hands. I am really fond of threesomes, BDSM, creative sex (rimming! frottage! blow jobs!), I like angst, in theory, if it's well done... Things that make me not read (or immediately stop reading) a story, regardless of who wrote it or how wonderful it might otherwise be: extreme character-bashing, scat/enemas, real people fiction (of currently alive people - historical people is a different matter), domestic discipline, extreme torture/abuse, cat abuse, agenda!fic, humiliation. Probably snuff as well, but I've never stumbled over that in a fic. (I can't think of anything else I'd not at least give a try... but feel free to challenge me *g*) Where I get my recs from: I try to friend all the recommendation LJs that I stumble across (drop me a line if there's one I don't have friended). I also get a lot of recs from friends, from the LJs I have friended at my main account, and from a number of webpages (that I'll eventually add to the sidebar of the layout). But most stories I find posted to the MLs I'm on, or in ML archives, or just discover while surfing fanfiction archives/personal webpages. Is there any way to look for a specific fandom/pairing? Yes: about once a week (usually sometime during the weekend), I add all new recommendations to the memories (see below), which are categorized by fandom. The main character(s)/pairing is usually indicated in the subject line. I will, eventually, get around to updating my website (*watches seveal people fall down in hysterical laughter* *kicks them*), and when I do, the recs will get sorted by fandom. Don't hold your breath, tho. Outdated Links I know that some of the story links are no longer valid. I haven't found the time (yet) to sit down and browse through all the recs to check, but if you come across a non-working link, reply with a comment to tell me, and I'll see if I can hunt down the story somewhere else. (the most difficult thing about doing daily recs, apart from trying to think up comments that will hopefully make people want to read what I rec, is actually *finding* the stories I want to rec online.) Comments on the recs, whether you agree or disagree with them, are always welcome (either as replies or as emails), as are recs for similar stories. I might get back to you, or I might not, it really depends on my general stress-level (ie, "I'm not ignoring you, I'm just being eaten by RL"). | |||||
